Newell-Hendershot Watermedia Exhibition 2008

Aug 2  - Art Fair and Reception

Aug 28-30th - Jean Corbett workshop

Aug 29 -  last day of show (Fri)

Aug 30  (Sat) - Pick up paintings

The Fourth annual Newell-Hendershot Watermedia Exhibition will be held at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area from August 2 until August 30th, 2008.  The exhibition is sponsored by the Watauga Valley Art League, Kingsport Art Guild, Bristol Art Guild, and the Tennessee Watercolor Society.  The judge for this year’s show will be Victoria Lenne, acclaimed experimental artist and past president of the Tennessee Watercolor Society.  Patsy Kelley Reading and Barbara Jernigan are co-chairpersons for this year’s event (rgourdshs@embarqmail.com or bjernigan1030@embarqmail.com or call Barbara at 423-483-3041).

The popular art fair with demonstrations by well known local artists, video showing of the 2008 TNWS exhibition and other events will be held on Saturday morning, beginning at 10 a.m. and will be followed by the awards reception at 2:00 in the afternoon.  Participants enjoy bringing their lunch for a picnic at the beautiful state park, before enjoying dessert at the reception.

This year the committee is excited to announce the first workshop in connection with the show.  Jean Corbett a well known NE Tennessee portrait artist who works in both watercolor and oil, will conduct a three day workshop at Sycamore Shoals.  The workshop will stress facial and floral paintings, using overlaying washes of varying colors to accomplish warm, lively skin tones and delicate florals with watercolor.  Workshop dates are August 28th - 30th, from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., with a lunch break.  Registration information will be mailed with show applications, but is open to any interested participant.  The price will be $70.00 for members of the sponsoring societies and $100 for non-members.

The workshop will coincide with both the pick-up of paintings by the exhibiting Newell Hendershot artists, and the beginning of the showing of a selection of the paintings exhibited in the TNWS 2008 Exhibition.  Watermedia artists whose work was juried into the 31st Biennial Exhibition will continue to show their paintings at various locations in the state after the Knoxville show closes in July.  Sycamore Shoals will be the location for that traveling exhibition in northeast Tennessee in September 2008

“Monotype Mamas” Art Show

The August art show in the Gallery at the Renaissance Center will be all original monotype prints, an art form that is fun, unique, and if you have ever tried it you'll agree, ADDICTING!  The twelve of us listed below will be showing some really interesting pieces, all for sale too.  Hope you can come!  There will also be demonstrations during the opening to show how this process works.  Reception Sunday, August 3rd !

April Jordan, Proud Member of the Kingsport Art Guild since 2001

Tomato Fest 2008, August 9, 9:00-12:00, Glen Bruce Park

Note from show coordinator Leslie Davis:

“Bring your tools to set up and work and bring some finished paintings, drawings, monoprints, etc., to set up in the gazebo for display and sale.  (No commission charged.)  Be sure you have your name, price, title, medium, etc., labeled on each piece.  I think you'll need some kind of hook to hang it on the display stands - a hook like peg boards use. Please let me (Leslie Davis) know via email if you plan to participate so I can give them a number of stands to put out in the gazebo.”

Gallery Girls …..

Congratulations to Cindy Phillips for her award from the Gallery Girls of Girls Inc. as their favorite from the Fun Fest Art Show.  Her acrylic painting, "Reading by Firefly", really peaked the girls' imagination.  A special unexpected treat happened when B.J. Carruthers was in the gallery and the girls had the opportunity to hear her talk about the techniques she had used on her two entries.

“Dear KAG Paint-in Members,
A tremendous thank you to the Art Guild, especially the Paint-in crew for donating such a generous amount of art supplies (from Donna Sweet's studio) to the Gallery Girls of Girls Incorporated.  They will put the pastels, paint, crayons, charcoal, brushes, paper, ribbon, easel, rack, pencils, erasers, and all the many, many wonderful supplies to great use.  These girls are so appreciative and responsive to the opportunity to explore the wide world of art.  Thank you for helping provide them with the means to travel that road!   Very gratefully,

Kathy Hawk”

"Girls Inc. has been the recipient of much generosity from the KAG recently.  In addition to sharing the donated art supplies from Donna Sweet's collection, KAG shared Gertie Gerwig with the Kids Central Workshop (Shoe Sculptures) during Fun Fest.  Gertie is the champion of the glue gun and photographer extraordinaire!  Bonnie Macdonald (Cultural Arts Dept.) and her two daughters, Grace and Heather, helped Kathy Hawk as elementary school age children created delightful shoe sculptures.
A charcoal workshop was led by BJ Carruthers at Girls Inc. to a full house of Gallery Girls who left all inspired and anxious to find the soap!  They had a great time creating portraits (very creative ones!) and drawings under BJ's motivating instruction.  To cap it all off, BJ presented Girls Inc. with a framed portrait from her show at the Renaissance Center, which had been selected by the girls as their Favorite prize.
Generosity galore from KAG to Girls Inc. - THANK YOU on behalf of Girls Inc.!  Kathy Hawk"

Blender Conference

Renaissance Center, Room 239 - Director, Byron Kindig, 5121 Red Robin Lane, Kingsport, TN  37664.  Phone:  (423) 863-2864.  byron@paraisoenterprises.com   This conference will include mini workshops on various intermediate and advanced techniques used in Blender and is intended for those who are comfortable with the basic use of the interface, basic modeling, and basic materials. The meeting time will be August 2 and 3, Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Sunday, 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon.

For more information about the conference, see Byron’s web site at www.byronsdesigns.com/classes.html  and to see the latest open movie entitled, Big Buck Bunny,  produced entirely in Blender by the Blender Foundation go to http://www.byronsdesigns.com/BBB.php  Be sure to press the expand button that looks like four arrows to see the movie full screen, also the ending is after the last of the credits so don’t miss the ending. This is probably the best way to see the capabilities of this program.  And remember, the program is absolutely free.

We have a professor from Kendal College of Art and Design, of Ferris State University , Grand Rapids , Michigan , coming to speak during the conference on Blender in the Academic Environment and Blender in Industrial Design.  He is hoping to have as many teachers as possible come to hear how this program can be incorporated into school programs with little or no cost, to school systems that are paying huge amounts of money ($ thousands) for the programs, that the students themselves can not afford to buy. He will also talk a bit about how it is being used in their jewelry design studios.

There will also be a segment on the new Blender Hair particles feature, presented by Matt Runion who was one of the artists in last December’s, Kingsport’s First International Digital Art Show . It allows for hair to be grown, combed, cut and shaped. The same system was used in the above mentioned Big Buck Bunny movie for the character’s fur and the grass.  Allen Davis, past Disney artist and current chief animator at the Bays Mountain Planetarium , will be talking about the process of creating storyboards, and animatics. This is also a very important step in the process of creating a successful animation movie. Sam Brubaker will talk about the use of Blender’s video sequencer to put video clips together and another talk on the use of creative thought processes in the production pipeline, using Blender.  We will have Trey Bowen from Florence , Alabama speaking on how to use Blender’s compositing and materials node system to create more detailed materials and textures, as well as compositing for post production.  Byron will be doing some instruction on the use of Blender’s powerful UV Mapping and texturing editor.  We will also have a project show and tell with critique, games and some door prizes supplied by the Blender Foundation in the Netherlands , and others, as well as lunch on Saturday.

“Sharks!”  Oh me, oh my!

East Tennessee State University has published a new 16-month calendar of Diane Nelson’s underwater photographs of marine critters from tropical coral reefs around the world.  The “Ocean Gems” calendar, which begins with September 2008 and continues through all of 2009, is being sold for $10 to provide funds for local schools to bring kids on field trips to the Natural History Museum at the Gray Fossil Site.  The art displays inside and outside the facility were featured in the July 2008 issue of A! Magazine for the Arts, illustrating the creative partnership between art and science.  The new “Ocean Gems” photographs in the calendar will be on display at the Museum September 20th -October 19th.  In addition to the exhibit, Diane will teach “Shark School” for kids 8-12 on Saturday afternoons, Sept. 20th, Sept 27th, and Oct. 4th.  For further information, contact the Museum at 423-439-3659 or check the website: www.grayfossilmuseum.org.
